An hour visiting a world-class museum from the sofa — chosen together, toured with a mission (find the mummy, count the dinosaurs, spot the painting with the dog), and closed with the gift-shop game where everyone draws the souvenir they'd have bought. Structure converts a website into a visit.

Before you start

The great museums put staggering amounts online free — virtual walkthroughs, gigapixel paintings you can zoom into brushstroke-deep, entire Egyptian galleries. The failure mode is treating it as a website: aimless scrolling dies in nine minutes. The fix is treating it as a visit — one museum, chosen together, with tickets (made of paper, obviously), a mission list, and a gift shop at the end.

The mission list is the engine: five things to find, written before entry — a creature bigger than our car, something gold, something older than two thousand years, a painting with a dog in it, the strangest hat. Missions convert passive looking into hunting, and hunting is how kids have always toured museums, physical or otherwise.

Choosing the trip

Shortlist three museums with wildly different pitches — mummies, dinosaurs or paintings is the classic ballot — and vote. Then the mission list, five items tuned to the collection, written in official capitals. Tickets made, torn at the living-room door, and the tour bus (sofa) boarded.

The tour

One person drives (rotate every gallery — driving is power), everyone hunts. Move slow, zoom often — the gigapixel zoom into a painting's cracks and brushstrokes is the single best trick in the format and reliably produces the hour's gasp. Mission finds get announced, ticked and celebrated; tangents get followed, because the tangent (why DID they wrap them like that?) is the visit working.

The café interval

Biscuits and the half-time review — best thing so far, strangest thing so far, and the one question the museum hasn't answered yet, which someone looks up while the kettle's on. Intervals are pacing; the second half is always the better half.

final 15 minutes

The gift shop

Everyone draws the souvenir they'd have bought — the mummy's cat, the triceratops skull, the strange hat — priced and labelled like the real shop. The drawings are the visit's receipt, and they go on the fridge as proof the family went to Paris on a wet Tuesday. Next trip's museum gets nominated before the tickets are swept up.

Make it fit your kids

2–4

Ten-minute visitors — one gallery, big creatures, maximum pointing. Their souvenir drawing is the visit's masterpiece and their mission is one item, found loudly.

5–8

The mission-list heartland — full hunts, tangent questions, gift-shop drawings with price tags. They'll request the mummy museum by name for weeks.

9–12

Give them the driving and the curation — they plan the route, read the labels aloud in their museum voice, and take the interval lookup somewhere genuinely deep. One asks for the real museum trip; book it.

teens

The gigapixel art zoom and the weirder collections (medical museums, space archives) are their tier — offered as a co-visit, not an activity. Their souvenir drawing arrives ironic and is secretly the best one.

Budget

Free at every layer — the museums charge nothing, the tickets are scrap paper, and the gift shop economy runs entirely on drawings. The most cost-effective travel the family will ever do.

If it’s going really well
