Family Poetry Night
An hour-long family poetry night format with easy starts, collaborative writing and no-pressure read-alouds. It builds confidence and language play across age ranges.

Before you start
Poetry night survives its own name by one law, announced early: silly counts double. The limerick — five lines, a rhythm everyone already knows from playgrounds, and a punchline slot — is the teaching form, and a limerick about the dog's crimes teaches metre, rhyme and economy while everyone's laughing too hard to notice the curriculum.
The second engine is the group poem: one line each, added in turn, seeing only the line before — the family's own exquisite corpse, read aloud in full at the end to reliable astonishment. Between those two forms, everyone from five to adult produces actual poetry inside an hour, and the lamplit reading gives it the tiny ceremony that makes it memory.
How it goes
Word limbering
Rhyme tennis first — a word served, rhymes returned around the table until someone's stumped, elimination optional. Then the one-minute list poem ("ten things in Dad's pockets, probably") as a whole-table sprint. The warm-up's real job is establishing the law — silly counts double, and the adults prove it first with something properly daft.
The limerick workshop
The form taught by hearing two classics aloud (the rhythm installs itself — da-DUM-da-da-DUM-da-da-DUM), then subjects drawn from the hat and everyone writes one — pairs for the youngest, with the kid supplying the rhymes and the adult holding the metre. The last-line punchline is the craft point; a limerick that lands its fifth line gets the table's spontaneous groan, which is poetry's highest honour.
The group poem
One sheet travels the table — each poet adds a line seeing only the previous one, paper folded as it goes. Theme optional ("night in this house" produces gold), line length free, contributions from the five-year-old transcribed verbatim. The unfolding and full read-aloud at the end is the night's set piece — the poem is always stranger and better than any single author could manage, which is quietly the whole lesson about collaboration.
The reading
Lamp on, big lights off, and every poet performs — their limerick, their favourite line, or (standing offer) a poem from any book in the house read in their best voice. Applause is clicks, poet's-café style, which children adopt with instant devotion. Keepers get transcribed into the family notebook with authors and dates — the anthology grows by three or four pieces a night, and reading last year's entries aloud becomes the fixture's own tradition.
Make it fit your kids
Rhyme-tennis naturals (sound beats sense, correctly) and the group poem's wildcard entry, dictated. At the reading they perform one line at maximum volume and take their clicks like a laureate.
Limericks in pairs, list poems solo, and total commitment to the clicking. Their verbatim lines are the notebook's best holdings and must never be tidied.

If it’s going really well
- The anthology reading — once a year, the notebook performed in full, poets credited, growth unremarked but visible.
- Poem post — the month's best limerick copied onto a card and posted to a grandparent, who will frame it.
