Before you start

The difference between a craft that looks like a guitar and an instrument is one word — tunable. Every build in this hour changes pitch when you change something: stretch the rubber band tighter and the note climbs; add water to the bottle and the clink drops; more rice, more hiss. Kids discover cause-and-pitch with their own hands, which is the entire foundation of acoustics delivered via shoebox.

The bottle xylophone is the hour's quiet masterpiece — six glasses or bottles, water at staggered heights, tapped with a spoon — because it can be genuinely tuned to a scale by ear, and a child who has tuned bottle three to sit between bottles two and four has done real musical work no toy glockenspiel ever asked of them.

The guitar works

Rubber bands stretched around the open box, thin to thick — pluck and compare. The discoveries arrive in order — thick bands hum low, thin bands sing high, and pressing a band mid-length while plucking bends the note (the moment every builder becomes a guitarist for four seconds). A pencil bridge under the strings sharpens the whole tone; tape one on and hear the upgrade.

Tuning the xylophone

Six bottles, water poured at rough stair-steps, tapped with a spoon — then the real work — tuning by ear. More water, lower note (the air column shrinks — the one-sentence why). Aim for a recognisable scale, test with a nursery-rhyme fragment, and adjust by teaspoon. Colour a drop into each level once tuned; the rainbow staircase is the section's stage presence.

The shaker foundry

Fillings auditioned — rice hisses, lentils rattle, dried peas thunder — and each maker voices their shaker to taste, lids taped with ceremony. The quiet-to-loud lineup gets tested behind a tea towel with the room guessing which is which; dynamics training, disguised as a guessing game.

final 15 minutes

First rehearsal

The orchestra assembles — guitars, bottles, shakers — and plays one structured piece — a steady shaker pulse, the xylophone carrying the tune fragment, guitars on dramatic accents. Call-and-response if the ensemble wobbles (it will wobble). Record the performance, name the band, and stage the instruments somewhere they'll be picked up on Tuesday — the second rehearsal is where instruments beat crafts.

Make it fit your kids

2–4

The shaker section, sovereign and loud — they fill, tape (attempt), shake and dance. The xylophone gets played via their hand on your spoon, and the colour-drop stage is theirs.

5–8

Full luthiers — guitar discoveries, teaspoon tuning and shaker voicing all land in this band. The rehearsal's structure holds them exactly long enough for one recorded take.

9–12

The acoustics tier — they'll chase the why, tune the bottles to an actual song, and engineer upgrades (a tissue-box guitar with a cardboard neck; a straw pan-pipe set). Hand one the conductor role and the ensemble tightens audibly.

teens

Production, not performance — they'll record the band properly, layer parts in a free app, and add a bassline of genuine competence to the family single. The physics conversation lands here too, if it arrives via music production rather than school.

Budget

The recycling provides the orchestra — rice, rubber bands and jars are all cupboard stock, and the only conceivable spend is a pack of rubber bands if the junk drawer is having a bad week.

If it’s going really well

  • The straw pan-pipes — snipped to stair-step lengths and taped; a second wind section in ten minutes.
  • Write the band a song — steal a tune, add family lyrics, and the instruments acquire a repertoire.
  • Busking hour — the orchestra plays the doorstep for grandparent arrivals; earnings in biscuits, reviews in hugs.
